Solar panels appeared on the recreational market not that long ago and gradually get more effective and affordable. Every year, the industry creates new products, and besides eco-friendliness, they offer new opportunities for those people who love active recreation and visit remote places far from civilization. Using energy-saving equipment and solar panels, you can do without heavy electric generators that run on gasoline or diesel fuel or, at least, reduce their use. Most solar panels don’t need maintenance, just wiping their surface, and can work even in cloudy weather, although with lower efficiency.
As a rule of thumb, the panel’s performance directly depends on its size, and the larger the panel, the more power you get. From a practical perspective, there are portable and stationary solar panels, and the former are more beneficial in terms of tourism, camping, or RVing. They can charge a smartphone, laptop, or other devices via a special power supply. Most of them are lightweight and weather-resistant; some panels can be easily folded and taken wherever you go, others come with a metal stand to provide the best angle toward the sun. Besides, there are models that can be attached to a backpack and charge when you’re traveling.
However, there are certain peculiarities in the use of solar panels on recreational vehicles. If you’re going to use an air conditioner or heater, it’s better to take an electric generator with you or just stop in a place with electric hookups as the panels will be insufficient. However, you can employ them to power other energy consumers such a TV, PC, or coffee maker, yet it makes sense to get a deep-cycle battery to accumulate and stabilize energy supply. Make sure the watt rating and peak current of the panel you’re about to purchase correspond to your needs. You may choose to have a test ride over the weekend relying solely on batteries (without a generator) and then evaluate their discharge.
