When going on a camping or hiking trip, riding a mountain bike or exploring the cave - any time you set out on an outdoor expedition, a portable headlamp can make the whole experience easier and more enjoyable. A lightweight headlamp is a convenient hands-free light source strapped around your head to brightly illuminate your path and the surrounding terrain. Headlamps will be indispensable for navigating hiking trails in the dark, exploring underground areas, etc.
Most modern headlamps utilize LED light bulbs instead of the standard halogen or incandescent bulbs. LED lights are powered by rechargeable AAA batteries and boast outstanding longevity and reliability. An average LED headlamp bulb will normally last up to 200 hours, while some high-powered versions can work for 100, 000 hours. As for the brightness, the lumen levels indicate how bright and intense the light emitted by the bulb is. There are models that have 50 lumen or as much as 500 lumen. White LED light bulbs are the most common and typically the brightest, while yellow ones tend to last longer.
A headlamp is attached to an adjustable elastic strap to be easily worn around the user’s head leaving hands always free. Lightweight models are usually secured by means of a single strap, while heavier headlamps use two straps that can be worn around the head or a helmet. For additional comfort of long-hour use, the headlamp itself rests against your forehead on a soft cushion. Most headlamps can be easily removed from their original strap and attached to your hat, cap or jacket or can be used like a small-size flashlight that can illuminate hard-to-reach spots. Commonly used for outdoor activities most headlamps are waterproof.
Almost all headlamps available on the market nowadays have the ability to tilt the lamp forward. Thus it will be easier to direct the light beam at the objects on the ground or in your hands, without bending or tilting your head. This feature will also come in handy for keeping the headlamp working while you are having a conversation with other people and yet want to avoid shining it directly into someone else’s face. It is also possible to regulate the headlamp light distance by dimming the light. In this way you will be able to decide whether you need your headlamp to shed light as far as possible or rather conserve the battery life.
